One of the first exercises that we did in class to get a feel of where everyone was at was to model an axe based on this concept by Cem Akkaya.

Stylistically, I felt that the concept could be best replicated through hand-painting the textures, however, others did take a more PBR-oriented workflow which led to some pretty appealing results.

Here is my UV layout which I painted over primarily using Clip Studio Paint.

I've had a fair bit of practice hand-painting textures so I ended up being pretty happy with the outcome, and as a first exercise for the school year it turned out pretty well.

However, reflecting on the piece I do wonder if it would have been better to have a crack at some PBR workflows. Achieving appealing stylized art with interesting variations in the roughness values is a little outside my comfort zone and could have been good practice for me.

This is my first post of what I imagine will be a busy year of study, and if you wanna hang out and follow along I'd appreciate that. I have a bit of a backlog of a few more things to upload as I started class at the beginning of February, but it won't be long before I'm up to date and posting some WIPs.

As always, feedback and critique of any sort are absolutely welcome. I'd also love to know, do you prefer to work with handpainted textures or PBR workflows? Why?

Here’s the Jekyll I made for my 3D modeling final! He’s inspired by a mix of Barrymore Jekyll and TGS Jekyll. There’s definitely some parts of it I could’ve done better if I had more time, but finals really snuck up on me this semester. Still, I got to put Jekyll in high heels and a corset for a grade, so that’s always fun :D

I love the shapes you use to draw machete, or really any character!! The way you draw noses, ears, bodies, fur, it looks like of I were to reach my hand out I could actually feel it, the bumps in the skin the squish of the flesh the softness of the hair. Not to mention the colors you use are very pleasing to the eye. So lovely... keep up the phenomenal work!!!

My newest creation…Modern Warfare. Knabstrupper Stallion. This guy took me so very long to make. But I am so proud of how he turned out. ^^; Now to get some sleep cause I legit have been awake for well over 24 hours just to work on this handsome boy. <3
